I live in Herston, a hamlet sitting in a sheltered spot alongside Widewall Bay in South Ronaldsay, one of the beautiful islands that make up the county of Orkney. I have been making stained glass panels inspired by the Orkney scenery, nature and culture for the past 16 years and would like to share my passion with both locals and visitors to Orkney.
I have a selection of stained glass panels on display in my workshop which are for sale. Prices range from £10 to £300. The stained glass has to be seen to be fully appreciated and due to it's weight and fragility I am not currently offering an online/postal service for larger items, contact me on the form below if you would like a smaller piece posted. See my Facebook page for more examples of my work. But all visitors to my workshop will be made very welcome and can purchase any of these items and take them home, well wrapped.
Please use the contact form below if you would like to discuss a stained glass commission.
Join me for a fun filled half, one or two day course to learn the skills and use glass, lead and tools to make your own stained glass panel. These courses are suitable for ages 15 and over, and will suit all artistic abilities. You will have a creative and fun time ending with a great sense of satisfaction as you show off your work, ever afterwards! [See notice below for changes taking effect from 1st January 2024]
My workshop sits facing the sea in a sheltered garden. Adjacent is the cottage, which is about 200 years old and was once the cooperage for a thriving herring fishing fleet. It now has all modern amenities for the use of visitors to the workshop.
Knowing the vagaries of Orkney weather, a lovely sunny day for walking and exploring beaches may be followed by a squally gale filled day - just the day to enjoy a fun new activity. (Although Herston is a good place to enjoy the sun too!) So I am offering the courses on a flexible basis. You should book in advance, first come first served! Use the contact form below or call me.
I will demonstrate the techniques and work with you to design your small panel, show you how to cut the glass and lead, pin out the design for soldering, then grout and polish. You will have a wonderful memento from your day, together with notes and tips for continuing your new skills at home. This will be an intensive day, not a single dull minute! (Max. 2 students per course)
The two day course is a slightly more leisurely version of the one day course, but you can spend time creating your own more complex design to create a larger panel and learn more about the techniques and tools used in the time available. (Max. 2 students per course)
This half day course, for those with time constraints, gives you the opportunity to try your hand at copper foiling a small free form design. You will create a simple pattern, cut the glass, foil and solder the piece, adding a hanging loop and applying patina to make your own sun catcher.
These courses are designed as one to one courses, but if you would like to come along with a friend/partner the workshop can comfortably accommodate 2 students. There is a 25% discount on the course prices.
Parking space available. Pickup from public transport can be arranged. All materials, safety equipment etc, and refreshments provided. Just bring a packed lunch, comfortable clothing and shoes, (no open toed sandals!). If the weather is good we can eat lunch outside and watch out for seals.
See the Herston Stained Glass Facebook page for a series of videos showing the different processes involved in making stained glass, and lots more,,,
